ANDEAN PHILOSOPHY

The challenge of running a hotel in the midst of the natural setting of the Sacred Valley of the Incas caused us not only to consider the natural world, but also to ask ourselves how our ancient ancestors understood this sacred space, and what they did in order to live in harmony with creation.

We came to understand that the religious system and beliefs of the Incas were essentially animistic, and that they identified with the divine and supernatural through their veneration of nature. For the Incas, the natural world in all its manifestations is a living expression of Mother Earth: mountains, rivers and everything that dwelt in them were considered sacred, and filled with the power of nature.

Unlike those religions based upon “revelation”, where man’s relationship with the sacred is defined by “a sacred book”, the religion of the Andes is essentially a way of honoring nature (the work of the creator).
